What is WEA?

The Federation of Workers Educational Associations. Te Whetereihana o Nga Kaimahi Akoranga o Aotearoa. WEAs are groups of mainly voluntary workers who come together to ensure that adult New Zealanders have opportunities to engage in information sharing and dialogue about matters of mutual concern. WEAs offer ongoing courses and seminar programmes, forums, discussion groups and support for community initiatives.

WEAs offer open entry, no examinations, low cost non-formal learning.

Read our Charter

Workers Educational Associations came to Aotearoa in 1915 with the goal of making learning opportunities available to those who missed out. This continues to be a goal.

All adults have experience and knowledge to bring to a learning situation. WEA ensures that, no matter what the topic, there is a chance for you to link what you know with what others know.

WEAs focus on creating a sustainable world. Sustainability is not just about how we use natural resources. It is also about our societal structures and relationships with each other. WEAs promote education that increases understanding of cultural, social, political and economic situations.
