Kapiti Coast WEA

The Federation of Workers Educational Associations. Te Whetereihana o Nga Kaimahi Akoranga o Aotearoa. Set up in 1977, originally as the Golden Coast WEA, the Kapiti Coast WEA is a non-profit-making incorporated society, which is a member of the Federation of WEAs in Aotearoa New Zealand. We have an elected committee of volunteers. Our office in the Waikanae Community Centre is staffed by our part-time paid co-ordinator.

We have around 230 members who receive programmes, newsletters, and invitations to members' evenings, full voting rights and the right to join the committee, but all courses are offered to the general community. Our year is divided into two semesters and we have around 80 classes each year. We have a mailing list of over 2000 with programme distribution also through community centres and the local media.

Our aim is to make our courses accessible to all, but particularly to the high number of retired people living in the Kapiti area. Rather than focusing on gaining qualifications, we stand for open entry, no examinations and low cost co-operative learning. Our programmes offer courses covering creative subjects, social and political issues and community development as well as personal growth and development.
